Tourism is now the largest source of export earnings well before the automobile, chemical, food, computers or oil. It involves considerable investment of capital, generates substantial revenue and creates important jobs. Thus, for many countries, it is an essential source of foreign exchange; it is even the first source for 38% of the country, according to a report by the World Tourism Organization on the development of tourism in the world, published in 2003.

3The tourism sector plays an important role in the Moroccan economy. An analysis of the annual report of Morocco's Central Bank published in 2004 shows that its share is three times higher than that of seafood, textiles and agriculture. Thus, one of the most important sectors in terms of economic growth, foreign exchange, investment and job creation appears to be tourism. Indeed, in 2003, according to the report, tourism accounted for 6.9% of GDP, created 600,000 direct jobs generated 5.9 billion dirhams in investment flows, with a capacity of 97,000 classified beds. All this explains this correlation is often assumed between tourism and development.

But what about the cost to the environment and social as well as for sustainable development? The main objective of this article is to explore the aspects that will make tourism a motor activity of sustainable development in Morocco.

5We start by treating tourism in Morocco and especially the vision 2010 to dwell on some problems that hamper its realization. How to combine this ambitious strategy to develop and quantitatively increase tourism with that of wanting to make tourism a sustainable activity in relapsed and without loss of its diverse tourism potential? This will be the issue we will discuss later.
